BOWFIN "MUDFISH" (Amia calva) OTHER NAMES: Blackfish, Grindle, Cypress Bass

RANGE: Statewide.

HABITAT: Likes still or sluggish water and can tolerate low oxygen levels. Likes to lurk under or around cypress trunks, stumps, pads or grass beds.

DESCRIPTION: It has a rudimentary air-breathing capability and gulps air at the surface. Dark brown, sometimes with yellowish patterns on the sides. The mouth is fitted with small, sharp teeth.

SIZE: Averages 2-5 pounds; fairly common to 6 or 8 pounds. World record 21 pounds, 8 ounces; Florida record 19 pounds.

FOOD VALUE: Edible, but not usually eaten.

GAME QUALITIES: Hard striker and a tough, surface-thrashing battler.

TACKLE AND BAITS: Can be caught, like it or not, on any kind of Bass tackle, lures and baits.

FISHING SYSTEMS: Casting; Still Fishing.
