REDBREAST SUNFISH (Lepomis auritus)
OTHER NAMES: Redbelly, River Bream, Robin Perch, Yellowbelly
RANGE: Statewide, but uncommon from Lake Okeechobee southward.
HABITAT: A fish of rivers and creeks, where it generally seeks out the swiftest water. Seldom found in lakes except those fed by large streams.
DESCRIPTION: Olive to yellowish on the sides, wth bright red male or yellow female belly.
SIZE: Averages 4-6 ounces. World record 1 pound, 12 ounces; Florida record 2.08 pounds.
FOOD VALUE: Best of all the Bream.
GAME QUALITIES: Also tops. Aggressive striker and strong battler for its size.
TACKLE AND BAITS: Canepoles have the widest following, but light spinning tackle is probably even more productive. Fly rods are also excellent. Crickets are the best bait, but worms and caterpillars are fine, too. Spinners and surface plugs are leading artificials.
