By Bonnie Drew | Many of Beaufort’s fitness centers were represented together today in the student center at the Technical College of the Lowcountry Beaufort Campus, giving participants the chance to take advantage of student discounts. The event attracted quite a bit of attention through demonstrations including slide dance and massage.
At center stage, Lynn Bryant and other members from Family Slide Dancers performed a routine to hip hop music. The demonstration could be better described as “fun” rather than exercise. The dancers wore casual t-shirts, tights, sweatpants and belly dance hip scarves trimmed with paillettes. Family Slide Dancers was organized originally by staff members at St. Helena Elementary School and they now offer several Beaufort County PALS classes.
Anytime Fitness on Robert Smalls Parkway is convenient for the hectic schedule of a student because it is open 24/7. A key fob gives members access after normal working hours. Offered at the table were rubber bracelets, soda koozies and free 7-day guest passes. They have 1,962 locations, and members are welcome at all of them
The Studio: Fitness and Nutrition, located on Boundary Street, boasts a range of activities including Zumba, Mat Pilates, Running Club, Gentle Yoga, and Mommy and Me classes. Not being limited to sweaty activities, The Studio also has a resident massage therapist: Cheryl Smith. She trained for massage therapy at TCL and was on site with her chair to perform Swedish massage. Now that might be something to miss class for!
