All Natural Carpet Cleaning and Stain Removal

Carpet feels more comfortable then wood or tile floors, but it can be a nightmare to keep clean! We asked a local carpet cleaning expert his advice on how you can keep your carpet looking clean and new. Kevin Snow, known around Beaufort, SC as “the tall guy,” has been professionally cleaning carpets in Beaufort and its surrounding areas since 1993. His business Carolina Carpet Cleaning uses a special no-soap cleaning solution that does not leave any residue and is safe for children, pets, and the environment.

We asked Kevin if he could give us some tips to clean your carpet and remove stains and foul odors. Here are his top 9 tips:

1. Treat the stain when it is fresh.

Don’t wait for the stain to dry. Treat it immediately. Once a stain has set, it will be very difficult to blot up and treatments may take much longer.

2. When treating a stain, blot, don’t rub.

Rubbing can easily spread the stain in deeper and can destroy the carpet fibers which makes your carpet age faster. To blot the area, press a white cloth or paper towel onto the surface of the stain and apply slight pressure. Also, when blotting the wet stain, start on the outside edge and work inward towards the center of the stain. Working outward may also spread the stain.

3. The three ingredients that will help keep your carpet clean and fresh.

Club Soda, Vinegar, and Baking Soda are all natural ways to keep your carpet clean and fresh and are completely safe to use with children, pets, and are safe for the environment as well.

4. Don’t Use Soap!

What? Soap is known as a cleaning agent so why shouldn’t I use soap on my carpets? “Soap solutions leave a sticky residue when added to carpet which can attract more long term stains. It is best to use cleansers that will not leave residue when cleaning your carpet or treating stains.”

5. Carbonation (Club Soda) works on most stains.

The next time you have a stain, blot any liquid up with a white cloth or paper towel, then apply club soda to the stain. The carbonation will loose most of the liquid from the fibers. “If club soda doesn’t remove the stain, chances are a store bought spot cleaner will not work either. And the club soda will not leave any sticky residue.”

6. Vinegar is a natural cleaner and deodorizer.

Although it has a pungent smell on its own, white vinegar is a powerhouse of all natural carpet cleaning. Mixing the vinegar with an equal amount of water in a spray bottle can be a great way to treat individual stains, especially pet urine stains. Spray the vinegar solution over the entire stain liberally and allow it to soak into the fibers, then blot up the mixture and stain with a clean sponge or cloth. You may have to repeat the process, but vinegar is very effective.

Vinegar can also be used in home carpet cleaners in lieu of carpet detergent. Be sure to check with the product’s manufacturer to make sure that the product is suited to using vinegar, but mix 1 part vinegar to 10 parts warm water to clean your carpets without any sticky residue. Note: white vinegar can have an unpleasant odor, but the smell dissipates as the solution dries.

7. Baking Soda to deodorize your carpet.

If your carpet is not stained, but still is odorous, you can use baking soda to remove the bad smells from your carpet. You can also add a small amount of essential oils of your favorite scent (such as lavender or citrus) to deodorize while adding a pleasant smell. Just mix about 1 cup of baking soda with a few drops of oil and shake in a closed container, then evenly distribute the mixture over your carpet. After about 30 minutes, you can dry vaccum up the baking soda and your carpet should smell much cleaner.

8. How do I remove gum from carpet?

Gum (or gummy candy) is a nightmare when it gets stuck in a carpet, but there is still hope. The best bet other than using a commercial solution is to freeze the gum with ice or an ice pack until it is hard and does not stretch when you pull it. Try to pull as much of the gum off as you can first. If some remains, you may need to trim your carpet fibers as close to the gum as necessary.

9. Deep Clean your Carpet every 6 months.

To really keep your carpet looking clean and new, it is important for most families to deep clean your carpet every six months or so. A deep cleaning service like Carolina Carpet Cleaning offers is more affordable than replacing a carpet prematurely and removes deep stains, dirt, smells, and other items from your carpet. Because Carolina Carpet Cleaning uses a special carbonated cleaning solution, there is no soapy residue and the carpet is usually dry in 1 hour.
